When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade

I have been golfing for as long as I can remember. As a child, I didn’t want to be a fireman, policeman or cowboy. I wanted to be a professional golfer. As most children grow up, they grow out of the phase of wanting to be an astronaut, rock star or whatever. But of course some children do grow up to fulfill their childhood dreams. Otherwise we wouldn’t have any policemen, firemen, astronauts and so on. Well I was bent on the idea of being a professional golfer.

I’m really very good at it to. I have a room full of trophies to show for it. I’ve also won all kinds of equipment and apparel. Unfortunately I am starting to recognize that I am not good enough for the professional golf tour. So what now? I really wanted this to be my job for the rest of my life.

I’m thinking that I don’t want to abandon golf altogether as way to make a living. I know I would do well, and be happy with a pro golf career. Maybe it’s not the fame and fortune of being in the spotlight. And maybe there won’t be the product sponsorships and endorsements. But I could teach golf. I’m not talking about just putting an ad on Craigslist or in the newspaper saying “I teach golf” either. I’m thinking about signing up for one of the golf colleges instead.

Leading by Example

Being a parent is a huge responsibility, and I have always believed it taking the role very seriously. One of the most important areas of parenting for me has been leading by example, which I have tried to do through out much of my kid’s life. That was fairly easy to do until recently. My kids are approaching mid teen years and we have begun having conversations about their college education and this is one area I have not led by example.

Therefore, I had realized I needed to go back to school myself. At first it seemed like a huge inconvenience and so I looked at getting whatever aa degrees were easiest to complete. However, upon contemplating my actions further I realized I would never tell my kids to select a degree program in that manner but rather to look at what challenged them most. Thus, I am now seeking an accredited online bachelor degree. This has prompted my son to seek enrollment in one of the programs that offer a bachelor in fire science degrees.

My original reason for enrolling in the online degree program was to show my children it was possible. However upon getting involved in the courses I have found that it is them who has shown me it is possible.
