Grocery Store Woes

There was once a time where every day I would wake up, put on a hideously ugly brown polo (with a collar that had shriveled up like paper) and would head to work as a cashier at a really large grocery store.

I would deal with customers that always acted as though they were in a hurry though they clearly had nowhere else to be. I would deal with managers with a sub standard education that took breaks every 5 minutes to have yet another cigarette but yelled at me if I took too long in the bathroom over my lunch break. And I would deal with people that would simply steal from our store because they thought it would be easy.

I’m quite glad those days are gone. My training at the White Plains Sanford Brown Institute helped put me in a position where I answer to people that value me, work with people that wish to be working, and treat people that come in looking for help. Beyond the people skills I learned from saying “no” 500 times a day to various customers, I can honestly say there is not a lot I miss from my time at that place.

Career Day in High School

When I was in high school, we had a career day, which was where we all picked an adult to go to work with. We also had to interview the person about their job. The idea was to choose a job we thought we wanted to do, and then see what a real day's work is like in that job.

One of my classmates went to one of the popular local radio stations on her career day. I remember being absolutely amazed that she had the guts to call the radio station and ask! She sat with them all day, found out what goes on at a radio station, and how to get into that kind of career.

Making My Parents Day

Education has always been very important in our family, so when I informed my parents that I was not planning on furthering my education after high school, they nearly had an aneurism. You would have thought that the world had come to an end. I think that my arguments had been very valid, but they did not want to hear any of it at the time.

After high school, I spent several months, much to their dismay, traveling through Europe. It was a fantastic experience and it is one that I would not trade in for anything. When I came home, I decided to go back to school. I knew that I was not university material, but I thought that I could take a course or two.

A friend told me about the Sanford Brown Institute NJ. I called and asked about the courses and when I was satisfied that it was something I would enjoy for the rest of my life, I enrolled myself.
