Baseball Friends

My son never had any trouble making As in school. I don’t know where he got his brains from, because unfortunately it didn’t come from his parents. The one thing he wasn’t so good at was making friends. I guess it was because he spent all his time reading, or because he was just plain old shy. He’s always been a sweet boy, and this isn’t just his mother talking—everyone says so. Well, he finally made a friend, who convinced him to join his school baseball team. Since he didn’t know the first thing about baseball, we found him some baseball training facilities in Florida. Micah was never particularly known in our family for his coordination or athleticism, but the instructors patiently walked him through the basics, and before long he was a competent player. Micah would get home from his Tampa baseball lessons and start reading about baseball. He read sports articles on the internet, encyclopedia articles, library books—you name it. He watched baseball games, and when he watched, he studied the players’ every move. Sometimes he even took notes! Now I’m not saying that renting out Tampa Florida batting cages will immediately make an amateur into a Joe Mauer, but he was able to pick up the game enough to make the team. Now he’s a catcher, and he uses his brain, too. He knows his pitchers’ throws and he memorizes every fact he can learn about the batters for each team he plays. Micah plays smart, and that’s all there is to it.
